Starting from Zero: The Next Genesis by Edwin Escolero
S0NG – LOG 06
Light bounces off a stalagmite high in the cave ceiling as a man holds a stone. The mineral gives off a prism glow. The explorer takes out his journal and makes an entry about the stone. Standing in the cavern he closes his eyes and begins to visualize the daily routine of those who worked there long ago.
Men wearing safety helmets move boulders inside the hollow cave. They chip away at rock with pickaxes and place the rubbish on a cart. A worker stubs his toe on the cart as he’s transporting the minerals and his fellow laborers share a hearty laugh. Other workers carefully place light fixtures in the dark sectors of the cavern. Standing next to a dented cart one man oversees the safety of the group while taking notes of the progress on a clipboard.
S0NG opens his eyes and puts away the journal as he walks deeper into the cavern. He stops upon coming across a dented cart now rusted by time and finds a workers helmet inside. Grabbing the helmet he ventures further where the light fixture remains suspended on the carved out ceiling.
Outside suddenly a gust of wind whips the sand into the air creating a vortex. The sun is shrouded by a veil of beige and the tranquil desert begins to whistle. Vultures begin to fly away as the sand dune begins to change shape.
